Junk Journal vs. Scrapbook

This post is going to be a little more difficult than the last two because there aren't as many differences between a junk journal and a scrapbook. Here is what Scrapbooking.com says about the origins of scrapbooks in their article.

"Where did scrapbooking originate? We have to go way, way back to early diaries and journals. As early as the Middle Ages, it was quite common for well-educated people to keep personal diaries or journals that recorded their thoughts on their life’s activities and events around them."

I encourage you to go over and read their article, it is truly fascinating. But, it also shows that junk journaling and scrapbooking find their roots in the same place. In fact, you could even say that they are basically the same thing with very few differences.

One of the main differences would have to be that scrapbooks typically have a well thought out and planned layout. Not that junk journals aren't planned but they do tend to have more randomness to them. Scrapbooks usually have a page devoted to a particular theme

And as you can see, they can be very elaborate.

Whereas, a junk journal tends to be more random since it is more for journaling than detailed memory keeping with the detailed layouts of a scrapbook.

I currently have two scrapbooks that I use to keep memories of Christmas holidays and of travel vacations. I also have two junk journals that I use for Christmas stories and for Holiday recipes. See, you don't have to forego one if you do the other!

One of the other main differences between the two is size. Typical scrapbooks are 12"x 12"and use scrapbook paper as the base of the page. I say typical but there are smaller scrapbooks out there, they are just not as commonly used. A junk journal typically is somewhere around 5.5"x 8.5" As you can tell with the typically and somewhere around, there are no rules to junk journals including size. Junk journalers will happily cut a page down to make it fit whatever size they have decided to make their cover and if it cuts off a pretty picture, well, they will just use it on a journaling card, no sweat.

So the last difference between the two, and I think is the most important, is the personality type of the user. If you like a more structured and designed page, then a scrapbook is probably your best bet. If you like random and in fact embrace your randomness, then welcome to the junk journal world!

I truly hope you are enjoying this series. I plan to have a couple more posts on this topic, one is for planners and then to compare all four of the different medias that I am comparing. So, come back next week for the post about planners!
